Ruqyah Self-Help Guide: A Journey Towards Healing

At the Ruqyah Support Centre (RSC), we believe that true healing is a journey that combines professional guidance with personal commitment and steadfastness. While our sessions provide immediate support, the most lasting and transformative healing comes through consistently strengthening your own willpower, yaqeen (certainty) in Allah’s help, and actively resisting harmful forces. Healing is a gift from Allah, and even small acts of remembrance and worship bring us closer to His mercy and protection. This guide is designed to help you continue this journey independently, building resilience through small, consistent actions that nurture your spiritual health and bring you closer to recovery over time.

The Power of Personal Effort in Healing

Self-help in Ruqyah is about making an active effort, even if it’s as simple as uttering Allah’s name. Every sincere action you take—no matter how small—is a step towards healing and a way of rejecting the influence of harmful forces. As the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) reminded us, “Good deeds bring light to the face and strength to the body, while bad deeds bring darkness to the face and weakness to the body” (Narrated by Ibn Abbas, reported in Musnad Ahmad).

When we are afflicted, darkness often feels overwhelming, and we may feel surrounded by forces that drag us further from the light of faith and closer to despair. Yet, each moment of resistance, each word of dhikr (remembrance), and each prayer is a step away from this darkness and towards Allah’s mercy. Your efforts, no matter how small, are recognised by Allah, and each act of worship builds a protective shield around you, restoring strength and light to your body and spirit.

The Illumination of Knowledge: Opening the Door to Allah’s Closeness

Allah has made learning a pathway to light, a way to dispel illusions and uncover the beauty of His guidance. Knowledge opens the door to sincere communication with Allah, nurturing our closeness to Him and inviting His attention to our needs and desires. When we seek knowledge, we learn how to ask for His help, which Shaytan strives to prevent by making us feel unworthy or incapable. But the truth is, if you don’t ask, you don’t receive. Shaytan’s greatest success lies in silencing our plea for Allah’s help, as he knows that through knowledge, we gain the courage to ask and build a relationship with Allah.

In a powerful hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) relays Allah’s response to our prayer, showing us the direct and intimate nature of communication with Him. The hadith, narrated by Abu Huraira, states:

“Allah, the Exalted, has said: ‘I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant shall have what he has asked for.‘ When the servant says, ‘Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds,’ Allah says, ‘My servant has praised Me.’ When he says, ‘The Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful,’ Allah says, ‘My servant has extolled Me.’ When he says, ‘Master of the Day of Judgment,’ Allah says, ‘My servant has glorified Me.’ When he says, ‘You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help,’ Allah says, ‘This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for.‘ When he says, ‘Guide us on the Straight Path, the path of those who have received Your grace; not the path of those who have brought down wrath upon themselves, nor of those who have gone astray,’ Allah says, ‘This is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for.‘”
(Sahih Muslim 395)

Reflections on the Hadith

This hadith reveals that our prayers are not just words but a living, dynamic dialogue with Allah. Each verse of Surah Al-Fatihah that we recite in prayer brings a response from Allah, affirming His closeness, mercy, and attentiveness to our needs.

Knowing this, we are inspired to deepen our prayer, realising it is not just a ritual but a meaningful connection with our Creator. Learning about Allah’s responses in prayer builds our yaqeen (certainty) and determination, turning our worship into a joyful experience of love and devotion. With knowledge, we naturally feel a drive to take action, recognising that each act of worship, remembrance, or recitation brings us closer to Allah’s light and protection.

Explanation: We seek the path of those blessed by Allah and avoid the paths of those who incurred His anger or strayed from guidance.

Understanding the Light of Faith and the Darkness of Evil

Faith is a light, and acts of worship are pathways that draw us closer to this light, dispelling the shadows of evil. Evil forces thrive in darkness, and when we distance ourselves from light, the darkness grows stronger. Shaytan’s purpose is to prevent us from reaching the light of faith, planting seeds of despair and weakening our will. But through patience, perseverance, and a commitment to even the simplest good deeds, we weaken these forces. The Prophet (ﷺ) warned, “Indeed, Shaytan flows through the human being like blood,” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 7171), affecting thoughts, emotions, and even physical sensations. Staying connected to Allah through good deeds actively blocks these harmful influences, illuminating the heart and soul.

When Feeling Overwhelmed: Relying on Loved Ones for Support

We understand that sometimes, the effects of spiritual afflictions can make even the smallest tasks feel impossible. In such times, Shaytan often manipulates thoughts to make you believe that you’re incapable, posing as your own voice and convincing you that you cannot take even a single step toward healing. This deception is meant to make you give up, but by relying on those around you, you can resist it.

When completely overwhelmed, we encourage you to give your obedience and will to a trusted loved one who can guide and encourage you in essential acts of worship and healing. Let them remind you to pray, drink Ruqyah water, bathe with it, and recite protective du’as. Their encouragement can replace the waswasa (whisperings) of despair and help you continue your journey even when you feel weakest. Know that these whispers are deceptions, and they do not define your ability to heal.

The Role of Patience and Perseverance

Healing is a journey of patience and perseverance, and each step you take brings you closer to relief. Allah promises rewards for every act done with patience. Allah says in the Qur’an, “And be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:46). Even when it feels impossible, your effort is not lost. Remember, each small act of remembrance, each moment of steadfastness, is a step in resisting the darkness and drawing nearer to Allah’s mercy.
